Session 2: AI Literacy in Action (Class 2 of 3)
AI can sound confident while getting it wrong. True AI literacy means you don’t just accept outputs — you interrogate them. You cross-check critical information, verify citations, confirm regulatory interpretations, sanity-check numbers, and ask for sources. If it impacts compliance, funding, tenants, or safety, it must be verified.
Just as important is understanding what AI cannot do in your field. In housing organizations, AI should never replace human judgment in housing determinations, lease terms, renewals, or stipulations. It cannot assume compliance liability, interpret ambiguous HUD guidance without supervision, navigate tenant trauma, or account for local political nuance. As PwC notes, AI augments professionals — it does not replace their expertise.
AI literacy also requires evaluating bias and downstream consequences. Could an output create disparate impact? Who might be unintentionally harmed? Is the result defensible under applicable laws, regulations, or policies? Ethical foresight is part of responsible use.
Finally, every organization needs clear guardrails. Use AI for drafting, summarizing, and data cleanup. Do not use it to make final tenant eligibility decisions. Require human review for compliance-sensitive work. Never input personally identifiable tenant data into public AI tools.
Without a written policy — and adherence to it — you’re not using AI strategically. You’re improvising.
